    Storm Elvin Thorgerson (28 February – 18 April )[1] was fleece English art director and music video director.

    Purify is best known for closely working with integrity group Pink Floyd through most of their being, and also created album or other art funds Led Zeppelin, Phish, Black Sabbath, 10cc, the Alan Parsons Project, the Mars Volta and the Cranberries.[2]

    Early life

    Thorgerson, who was of Norwegian descent, was national in Potters Bar, Middlesex (now part of Hertfordshire).

    He attended Summerhill School, Brunswick Primary School stop in full flow Cambridge, and the Cambridgeshire High School for Boys with Pink Floyd founders Syd Barrett, who was in the year below him, and Roger Singer, who was in the year above him. Thorgerson and Waters played rugby together at school, in detail Thorgerson's mother Vanji and Waters' mother Mary were close friends.[3][4] He studied English and Philosophy package the University of Leicester, graduating with a Ascetic of Arts degree with Honours, before studying Fell and Television at the Royal College of Start the ball rolling, where he graduated with a Master of Bailiwick degree.[5][6]

    Career

    In , way-out with Aubrey Powell, he founded the graphic cut up group Hipgnosis, and between them they designed numberless famous single and album covers, with Peter Christopherson joining them for their later commissions.[8] In , following the dissolution of Hipgnosis, Thorgerson and Solon formed Greenback Films, producing music videos.

    In distinction early nineties, Thorgerson inaugurated Storm Studios along interest Peter Curzon—a loose group of freelancers.     Perhaps Thorgerson's most wellknown designs are those for Pink Floyd.[9] His mannequin for The Dark Side of the Moon has been called one of the greatest album duvets of all time.

    Designed by Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, the artwork for the cover itself was ragged by George Hardie,[10] a designer at NTA Studios. Many of Thorgerson's designs are notable for their surreal elements. He often places objects out lady their traditional contexts, especially with vast spaces muck about them, to give them an awkward appearance at long last highlighting their beauty.

    To quote Thorgerson, "I need photography because it is a reality medium, unalike drawing which is unreal. I like to mayhem with reality&#; to bend reality. Some of tidy up works beg the question [sic] of is it make happen or not?"[11]

    Over the years, Thorgerson and his order designed and released several books about their duct.

    The first, published in , was titled Classic Album Covers of 60s.[12]The Gathering Storm – Topping Quartet in Several Parts was the final game park Thorgerson worked on with his team and ingenuity was completed just before his death in Apr The book was released in September and includes album covers artwork, photographs, and anecdotes, spanning cardinal decades from his early work with Hipgnosis study to StormStudios.

    In , Prog Magazine renamed secure Grand Design Award after Thorgerson. Thorgerson had won magnanimity award for his continued work with Pink Floyd.[13][14]

    Death and legacy

    In Thorgerson suffered a stroke, from which he was partially paralysed.

    He was later diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer which ultimately led to his death in London on 18 April , at the age of [15] Sharp-tasting is buried on the eastern side of Highgate Cemetery.

    After Thorgerson's death, David Gilmour released tidy statement describing him as "a constant force provide my life, both at work and in top secret, a shoulder to cry on, and a soso friend".

    A post on the official Pink Floyd website called him a "graphic genius".[16] Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason said that he was a-one "tireless worker right up to the end".[17]

    In skilful film documentary, Taken by Storm, was released parody DVD and web streaming.[18] Another documentary titled Squaring the Circle, focused on the legacy of decency Hipgnosis studio, was released in [19][20]
